Every participant — whether an individual or a company — does not exist in isolation. We are all wrapped in a complex network woven from social chains, transaction chains, trust chains, and dependency chains.

This web is both a lifeline for survival and potentially the most inescapable prison.

The master "scenario builders" understand deeply that directly controlling every independent individual is inefficient and difficult. The most efficient form of control is to control the "topological structure" of this web. They do not control you directly; they only control your "connections." By occupying the key nodes of the network, or by monopolizing a specific type of "relational connection," they can, like a skilled puppeteer, manipulate a few critical strings to command the dance of every puppet on the stage.

This relation-based control has at its core the "locked valve." It is not about blocking every exit, but about precisely identifying and controlling the "traffic entrance" or "critical fluid" upon which the entire system depends for survival (such as social traffic, key components, or innovation capital). Once the valve is locked, the fate of the entire downstream ecosystem depends entirely on the will of the valve's master.

In this chapter, we will dissect three different levels of "relational prisons": the "WeChat hostage effect," which holds users captive by monopolizing "social relationships"; the "throat-gripping tactic," which harvests profits from an entire industry by controlling key nodes in the "supply chain"; and the "game of consecutive strikes," which eliminates future uncertainty through continuous mergers and acquisitions driven by "capital."

5.1 The "Social Hostage" Effect of WeChat: Why Not Restricting Your Departure Means You Can Never Escape

Among all modern commercial products, WeChat is perhaps the ultimate example of the "relational prison" concept. It has built such a powerful forced convergence system that it hardly needs to use any traditional "coercive" measures.

WeChat does not charge you, it does not force you to open it every day, and its features even seem quite "restrained." Yet, for over a billion Chinese users, it is a platform from which they "effectively cannot leave."

This powerful lock-in effect does not stem from the irreplaceability of its product features, but from its success in completely "internalizing" your most important, non-renewable asset — your social relationship network — within the platform itself.

In this system, you, along with all your relatives, friends, colleagues, and clients, become the platform's "social hostages." You hold each other hostage, collectively constructing a digital prison that seems warm and comfortable on the outside but is airtight on the inside.

The Transformation from "Tool" to "Habitat"

To understand the "social hostage" effect, we must first understand how WeChat completed its transformation from a "communication tool" to a "digital habitat."

Phase One: Tool (Replacing SMS)

In its early days, WeChat's core value proposition was "free instant messaging," directly competing with telecom operators' SMS and MMS services. During this phase, user switching costs were relatively low; if a better free communication tool appeared, users could potentially leave.

Phase Two: Network (Building the Relationship Graph)

This was the most critical step. Through features like "Shake," "People Nearby," and integration with phone contacts, WeChat rapidly helped users rebuild and expand their real-world social networks on the platform. After locking in core social relationships, WeChat began its ultimate "forced convergence" layout. Through a series of features including "Official Accounts," "Mini Programs," and "WeChat Pay," it systematically "converged" an increasing number of daily life scenarios into its own ecosystem.

The Formation Mechanism of the "Social Hostage"

Once WeChat completed the transformation from "tool" to "habitat," the "social hostage" predicament was formally established. The operating mechanism of this predicament is a self-reinforcing logical loop, built through the collective participation of all users.

Let us conduct a thought experiment: Suppose today a tech company launches a new social app called "SuperChat," which surpasses WeChat in every aspect — functionality, design, privacy protection, and more. Now, as a rational user, you decide to migrate from WeChat to SuperChat.

You will face a three-layer, insurmountable "relationship barrier":

  1. Strong Tie Barrier (Family, Close Friends): First, you need to convince your closest family members and friends to migrate to SuperChat with you. This is an extremely difficult persuasion process. Because each of them is also held hostage by their own social networks. Your mother may need WeChat to chat with her sisters, your friends may need it to communicate with their colleagues. Asking them to abandon their entire social network just to accommodate your "move" is a cost they cannot bear.
  2. Weak Tie Barrier (Colleagues, Clients, Acquaintances): The difficulty at this level is exponential. You can hardly convince all your colleagues and clients to install a new app just to accommodate you. Work communication, file transfers, business cooperation — these have formed deeply entrenched collaboration habits on WeChat. If you insist on leaving, you lose not just casual conversation, but your "ability for social collaboration." You will be "forcibly expelled" from your professional network.
  3. Ecosystem Services Barrier (Official Accounts, Mini Programs, Payments): Even if you miraculously convince all your contacts, you will still face a "digital wasteland." On SuperChat, you cannot read the Official Accounts you are used to, cannot use the Mini Programs you depend on, and cannot scan QR codes to pay at street-corner convenience stores. You would be voluntarily exiling yourself from a fully functional "digital city" to a barren "digital island."

Do you see it? The brilliance of WeChat's control technique lies in this: it never restricts your right to "leave"; it simply makes the consequences of "leaving" unbearable by completely monopolizing your "social connections."

Your status as a hostage is not conferred by WeChat's coercion, but defined by your "mutual dependence" with others. Every friend who is unwilling to leave WeChat becomes a lock preventing your departure; conversely, your own "unwillingness to leave" becomes another lock holding them in place.

The Privatization and Tyranny of "Connections"

The essence of the "social hostage" effect is the "privatized monopoly" of the public resource known as "the right to human connection."

Before WeChat, our social relationships were distributed across multiple channels: phone calls, SMS, email, in-person gatherings. This was a relatively open, decentralized network. WeChat succeeded in converging this diversified network onto a centralized private platform under its complete control.

Once this monopoly is achieved, the platform gains supreme power to define the "rules of connection."

  • It can decide which Official Accounts receive more visibility through traffic distribution, thereby wielding the power of "life and death" over content.
  • It can decide, through the opening or blocking of APIs, whether content from competitors (such as Douyin or Taobao) can be shared on its platform, thereby executing a "dimensionality reduction strike" against external competitors.
  • It can confine developers and merchants within a closed Mini Program ecosystem, forcing all their commercial activities to take place inside WeChat's "walled garden" and pay "rent" (transaction commissions) to the platform.

WeChat, this seemingly "small and beautiful" product, has actually built one of the most powerful "forced convergence" systems in the commercial world. It does not rely on technological barriers (instant messaging technology is not that complex), nor on hardware lock-in. It relies on only one thing — the oldest and most fundamental of human needs: emotional connection and the need for collaboration.

It has successfully transformed this need into the most impregnable moat for a commercial empire. It proves a profound truth: the highest form of control is not controlling your body, nor controlling your mind, but controlling your connections to the world. When all your connections must pass through that single valve of theirs, do you still possess true freedom?

5.2 Supply Chain Throat-Gripping: Control 1% of the Key Nodes, Converge 99% of Industry Profits

If WeChat builds its prison by monopolizing the "people-to-people" connection, then in the broader world of physical industry, another equally powerful form of control is achieved by monopolizing the "business-to-business" connection. That connection is the "supply chain."

A modern supply chain is a long, precision-crafted chain of collaboration, composed of thousands of companies working together like a finely tuned clock. From the extraction of raw materials at the most upstream stage, to the manufacturing of components, the assembly of modules, and finally to the sale and distribution of finished products. Every link in the chain is interconnected, each indispensable.

Within this seemingly prosperous and diverse landscape of collaboration, a brutal law of power is hidden: the distribution of profits along the entire supply chain is often determined not by the value created, but by the degree of control over "scarcity."

A skilled "industrial scenario builder" does not seek to control every link in the supply chain — that would be uneconomical and impractical. What they seek is to identify and control that 1% of the most critical, most irreplaceable "throat-gripping points."

Once such a "throat-gripping point" is secured, they hold the "master valve" of the entire supply chain. They can sit at this node, like a toll collector at a mountain pass, effortlessly "converging" the vast majority of profits flowing through the chain into their own pockets. All other participants in the chain, no matter how hard they work or how large their scale, will be reduced to "profit laborers" serving this "valve master."

The Power Code Behind the "Smiling Curve"

Stan Shih, founder of the Acer Group, once proposed the famous "Smiling Curve" theory. It depicts the distribution of added value across different segments of an industrial chain. The two ends of the curve curve upward, representing the segments with the highest added value: upstream technology R&D, patents, and key components; and downstream brand marketing, channels, and customer service. The middle of the curve, which dips downward, represents the segments with the lowest added value: midstream processing, manufacturing, and assembly.

This curve, on the surface an economic model of "added value," is beneath the surface a strategic map of "power and control." Companies occupying the two ends of the curve succeed precisely because they have seized control of the "scarcity valve" of their industrial chain.

  • The upstream technology valve: Apple, Qualcomm, Intel. These companies control the "technology wellspring" of the entire information industry by building deep technological moats in chip design, operating systems, core patents, and other areas.
  • The downstream brand and channel valve: Apple, Nike, Coca-Cola. These companies control both the "mind-share entrance" to end consumers and the "shelf-space entrance" by building powerful brand recognition and global distribution networks.

Those companies trapped in the middle of the curve — manufacturing and assembly firms like Foxconn — despite possessing enormous factories and millions of employees, and creating massive output value, have virtually no bargaining power because the segments they operate in are "replaceable," lacking scarcity. They can only earn meager processing fees under the harsh terms set by the Apples of the world.

Two Models for Controlling the "Throat-Gripping Point"

Becoming a "valve master" typically has two main paths:

Technology Monopoly Model: Becoming the "Only Supplier"

We have already seen the logic of this model in the ASML case in Section 4.3. It involves forming a de facto "exclusive monopoly" in an extremely critical, high-technology-barrier component or raw material, thereby gripping the throat of the entire downstream industry.

Shin-Etsu Chemical's "Silicon Wafer" Empire:

Silicon wafers are the fundamental material for manufacturing all chips. Their purity and size directly determine the quality and cost of chips. In this seemingly basic field, Japan's Shin-Etsu Chemical and SUMCO together hold over 50% of the global market share. In the high-end, large-diameter silicon wafer segment, their monopoly position is even more solid.

This means that all chip manufacturers in the world (whether Intel, Samsung, or TSMC) have their "lifeblood" — the supply of their most basic raw material — in the hands of Japanese companies. Any price increase, production cut, or change in technological direction by Shin-Etsu Chemical triggers an earthquake throughout the entire semiconductor industry.

Germany's "Hidden Champions":

The strength of the German economy comes largely not from household-name consumer brands, but from hundreds of "hidden champions." These small and medium-sized enterprises often hold the number one global market share and absolute technological authority in extremely niche, unremarkable industrial components (such as specialized bearings, high-end valves, precision optical components).

A BMW may consist of tens of thousands of parts, but a "specialty sealing ring" worth only a few dozen euros, produced by a German hidden champion, could be the "throat-gripping point" that determines the performance and lifespan of the entire engine. BMW can replace its seat supplier, but it would be very difficult to find a substitute for this sealing ring. This tiny sealing ring becomes the "micro-valve" through which its master harvests profits from the automotive industry.

Platform Integration Model: Becoming the "Only Buyer"

If the technology monopoly strangles the throat from the "upstream," then the platform integration model exerts reverse control from the "downstream." It involves building an extremely powerful "channel platform" or "procurement alliance" to become the "sole" or "largest" customer for countless upstream suppliers, thereby gaining immense bargaining power and squeezing upstream profits in reverse.

Walmart's "Procurement Hegemony":

Walmart, as the world's largest retailer, does not produce any goods itself. But through its tens of thousands of stores worldwide, it has built an unmatched "final channel" to hundreds of millions of consumers. For upstream consumer goods manufacturers (such as Procter & Gamble and Unilever), this channel is a battlefield they "cannot afford to miss."

To get their products onto Walmart's shelves, suppliers are forced into fierce competition and must accept Walmart's extremely harsh procurement terms: the lowest purchase prices, the longest payment cycles, and various forms of "slotting fees."

By aggregating massive "consumer demand," Walmart has turned itself into a giant "procurement valve." It converges countless dispersed suppliers into its own single, powerful procurement system. Within this system, rules are set by Walmart, and profits are distributed by Walmart. To compete for Walmart's orders, suppliers are dragged into endless "involution" and price wars, compressing their own profit margins to the limit.

The Automotive Industry's "Tier 1 Suppliers":

In the automotive supply chain, Tier 1 suppliers like Bosch and Continental play a similar role. They supply directly to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and integrate hundreds of Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers beneath them.

To simplify management, OEMs often cooperate with only a few Tier 1 suppliers. This makes Tier 1 suppliers a critical "integration valve." On one hand, they receive large orders from OEMs; on the other, they use their scale advantage to squeeze downstream small and medium-sized suppliers. This pyramid-shaped supply chain structure ensures that profits are "converged" upward, ultimately collecting into the hands of a few Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs at the apex.

The throat-gripping war in the supply chain is a war over "irreplaceability." Victory belongs not to the companies with the largest scale or the most employees, but to those that have successfully embedded themselves into the "sole" or "most scarce" node of the industrial chain.

They are like giant crocodiles coiled at the narrowest point of a river, quietly waiting for the "school of profit" to swim by. They do not need to chase every fish; they only need to guard this single passageway to ensure they receive the richest share. And every other creature in the river is merely a link in this brutal food chain.

5.3 Capital's "Consecutive Strikes": Eliminating Potential "Variables" Through Continuous M&A, Locking Down Industry Freedom

We have seen the relatively "static" prisons built through "standards" and "supply chains." Now, we will explore a more "dynamic" and "forward-looking" means of control — capital.

In the commercial jungle, if "innovation" is the ever-emerging force of "entropy increase" that tries to break existing patterns, then "capital" — especially the strategic capital held by industry titans — is the most powerful tool for "entropy reduction."

Its work is not to compete with you in the present, but to eliminate you in the "future." Through systematic, continuous "acquisitions," it proactively and preemptively removes all "potential variables" that could threaten the existing order in the future.

We can call this strategy "capital's consecutive strikes." Like the "connecting" and "blocking" moves in the game of Go, its purpose is not to capture the stones immediately before you, but to build a thick external influence that firmly surrounds the entire "possibility space" of the industry, locking down its "degrees of freedom."

From "Building" to "Buying": The Outsourcing of Innovation

When an industry enters a mature phase, the giants within it often face the "innovator's dilemma." Their massive size, rigid processes, and dependence on existing profits make it difficult for them to undergo disruptive self-revolution internally.

Thus, a more efficient strategy emerges: "outsourcing" innovation to the entire market.

The giants no longer need to take risks themselves, exploring countless uncertain technological directions. They only need to sit at the center, like a venture capitalist with deep pockets, closely watching the new, vibrant startups emerging in the industry.

These startups are like the giants' "scouts," sent into the future. With their passion and their founders' personal stakes, they validate new business models and explore new technological paths. The vast majority of them will fail and die.

What the giants need to do is simply open their checkbooks — when a few of those "scouts" have successfully run the gauntlet, validated the market, and begun to show signs of "threat" — and make an acquisition offer they cannot refuse.

In this way, the giants use "money" to buy "time" and "certainty." They avoid the high cost of trial and error in their own innovation and, with surgical precision, absorb potential disruptors before they have grown into towering trees.

Facebook's "Defensive Acquisitions": Killing Future Enemies

The social media giant Facebook (now Meta) is the master of the "capital's consecutive strikes" strategy. Its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, once famously articulated its acquisition logic: "It is better to buy than to compete."

Two of Facebook's most famous acquisitions in its history perfectly illustrate the essence of this "defensive acquisition" strategy:

  1. Acquisition of Instagram (2012, $1 billion): In 2012, Instagram was just a small company with 13 employees focused on photo sharing. But it displayed two traits that frightened Facebook: first, its mobile user experience far surpassed the clunky Facebook app of the time; second, it attracted a large number of young users — exactly the demographic Facebook feared losing most. Instagram posed a "generational threat" and a "paradigm threat" to Facebook. It represented a cooler, more mobile future for social networking. Rather than trying to compete by imitating a "filter" feature within its own main app, Facebook decisively acquired Instagram for $1 billion before it had even generated any revenue. This acquisition, considered astronomical at the time, is, from today's perspective, the most successful investment in Facebook's history. It not only eliminated one of its most dangerous potential competitors but also bought itself a ticket to the "mobile social future."
  2. Acquisition of WhatsApp (2014, $19 billion): Two years later, Facebook made an even more staggering acquisition — purchasing the messaging app WhatsApp. The threat WhatsApp posed to Facebook was more direct and fundamental. It was eroding the very foundation of the "communication tool" social network on a global scale. It boasted higher open rates and user stickiness than Facebook Messenger. More importantly, WhatsApp represented a "private social" network, completely different from Facebook's "public social" model — a capability not in Facebook's DNA. When all the giants in an industry begin to systematically adopt the "capital's consecutive strikes" strategy, the overall "innovation vitality" of that industry is gradually locked down, ultimately leading to a state of "heat death."

Convergence on Entrepreneurs:

For entrepreneurs, their "exit paths" are greatly narrowed. Their ultimate dream is no longer "to become the next Google," but "to be acquired by Google." This transforms the entire startup ecosystem's thinking paradigm from "how to achieve disruptive innovation" to "how to create a 'functional module' that meets the acquisition criteria of the giants and can be integrated."

Convergence on VC Capital:

The investment logic of venture capital is also altered accordingly. VCs tend to favor projects with a clear "acquisition prospect" over high-risk "hardcore innovations" that attempt to challenge the industry's foundations. The flow of capital comes to be "defined" by the strategic needs of the giants.

Convergence on Consumers:

Ultimately, consumers face fewer and fewer choices. They may appear to have new products and new apps to use every year, but behind all these new products lies the same "controlling entity." Innovation within the industry becomes a form of "interior decoration" conducted within the "walled gardens" of a few giants.

This type of convergence, achieved through capital, is the most difficult to regulate and the hardest to detect. It always presents itself under the guise of "promoting innovation" or "strengthening synergies." But its end result is a systematic reduction in the "degrees of freedom" of the entire industry. All potential "possibilities" that could bring about structural change are gently but firmly "pruned away" by the invisible hand of capital in the early stages of their germination.

The jungle ecosystem ultimately degenerates from a species-diverse, vibrant tropical rainforest into a species-poor, orderly but lifeless "artificial pine forest."

Conclusion

In Chapter Five, we dissected the invisible prison based on "relationships." From WeChat using the "social hostage" effect to lock us into its digital habitat, to industry titans harvesting entire industries' profits by gripping the throat of the "supply chain," to strategic capital eliminating all future uncertainties through continuous "acquisition strikes."
