What This Master Ledger Enters, and What It Does Not
How current returns are to be separated from the costs of recovery, conversion, and future choices. This volume belongs to philosophical argument and thought experiments. Terminology, normative requirements, and empirical material play distinct roles: normative requirements call for reasons and counterexamples, empirical conclusions require corresponding research or records, and story settings show only how conditions combine. Writing an empirical claim as "possible" still does not lift the obligation to state one's grounds.
How Returns and Depletion Flow Across Ledger Pages
This volume proceeds in three layers. The first is RC's normative account of the available margin, pressure transmission, and sustainable decision-making. The second consists of this volume's bridging assumptions: time, the body, money, relationships, and data cannot be converted into one common resource, yet each of them can alter the accessibility of future choices. The third is empirical judgment: whether a given arrangement of labor, lending, platform, or consumption constitutes harvesting must be checked separately against returns, depletion, and future locking; it cannot be answered merely from high-intensity investment or the existence of profit.
The closed loop tested across the book is: invocation → displacement of depletion → locking of exits → continued participation interpreted as consent → declining performance individualized → the exhausted replaced. The three ledgers provide points of entry for checking: the ledger of returns records to whom gains accrue, the ledger of depletion records recovery and maintenance, and the ledger of the future records debts, credentials, profiles, and switching costs. Wherever any link in the loop can be substantively negotiated by those who bear it, the loop may change direction.
Units of Accounting and Non-Convertible Items
RC: the author's philosophical framework adopted in this book, denoting the construction of reality through converging observation. Theoretical citations indicate intellectual provenance; they do not automatically prove social or psychological mechanisms.
Available margin: RC 1.4 ties free will to possibilities not yet locked in. This volume bridges it into the actual conditions of future choice, observing time, the body, money, relationships, and paths of conversion separately; these items cannot be fused into a single conserved asset.
Pressure transmission: RC 3.2 uses it to distinguish dissolving pressure from a position of advantage and transferring systemic losses downward. This volume follows the chain of returns to trace who finally settles the pressure — through waiting, care, recovery, debt, or the loss of opportunities to switch.
Sustainable decision-making: RC 4.3 stresses keeping optionality present, offsetting the solidification of rules with temporal margin and parallel paths. On this basis the volume asks whether, after growth has been delivered, one can still change course — rather than pronouncing every commitment, focus, or long-term investment unfree in advance.
Theoretical dimensional reduction: RC 2.3 requires theory to acknowledge boundaries of level, subject, and time. The volume uses this to restrict the ledger: measurement can reveal concealed transfers, but it has no authority to convert a whole life back into a single total score.
Reproduction costs: the costs of sustaining the body, skills, and relationships so that subsequent action can continue; this book accounts for them by concrete object and assumes no uniform conversion.
Affordable exit: the conditions under which one can, on leaving, still bear proportionate obligations and maintain a basic life; not a cost-free breach of contract.
Status returns: returns that depend on relative position and the recognition of others; they should be distinguished from absolute improvements in skill or usable function.
Polemical coinages: "negative assets", "the financialization of life futures", "attention drilling", "artificial scarcity", "the industrialization of anxiety", and "the involution perpetual-motion machine" are each qualified in Chapters 1, 5, 10, 13, 15, and 17. They are critical names that point to specific relations, not ontological attributes of persons, financial facts, or social laws; whether they apply must be checked against the conditions of mortgage, returns, control, exit, and counterevidence.
The RC terms and this volume's analytical vocabulary above are working definitions within the author's framework. Words such as labor, care, statistics, and feedback have other technical uses in the respective disciplines; a shared name does not make this book's inferences disciplinary conclusions.

Comparing the group working at least 55 hours per week with the 35–40 hour group, we adopt only the population-level risk association, without inferring individual disease, the effect of compensatory rest, or an absolute safety threshold.
Task switching in Chapter 10: Rubinstein, Meyer, and Evans (2001), the abstract on page 763 and the paper's experimental methods and results (pp. 763–797). The experiments used specific tasks; this chapter does not take their reaction-time results as specifying a universal number of recovery minutes for daily labor.
Chapter 23's distinction between verifying material and member authorization: see RC 1.3 and 2.4 to check the boundaries of the terms; the Linchuan negotiation outcomes are story settings, not real historical statistics.
