Chapter 5: Simulation -- Rehearsing the Future in Your Mind

In the previous two chapters, we played the roles of intelligence analyst and mapmaker. Through arduous intelligence collection and systematic, in-depth analysis and integration, we now possess two unprecedentedly clear "decision maps" -- the "System Profile" and the "Influence Network Diagram."

These two maps are the crystallization of our wisdom. They have transformed a chaotic, vague, and uncertain real-world challenge into a structured, visualized strategic sand table.

And yet, possessing the most accurate map alone does not guarantee victory in war. Before launching a general offensive, an excellent commander must run hundreds or even thousands of simulations on the sand table, rehearsing every possible route of attack, every possible enemy reaction, and every manner of contingency.

This process is the essence of "temple calculation" -- the art of "orchestrating victory within the command tent and winning decisively a thousand miles away."

The Reckless Charger's dictionary has no entry for "simulation." Driven by a surge of passion and instinct, they devise a plan they imagine to be brilliant, and then pour in every resource and charge headlong. Their life is filled with all-or-nothing gambles: when they win, it is luck; when they lose, it is the norm. They are conducting costly "trial and error" with their real lives.

The Open-Map Navigator, by contrast, relocates the process of "trial and error" from the real world into their own mind. What they pursue is to have already won the battle on the "simulated battlefield" within their head before taking any real action.

In this chapter, we will learn the third and highest-order skill of the "open-map" methodology -- Simulation. We will learn how to use the two maps we have drawn to conduct a rigorous, profound, and multi-dimensional "mental war game."

This process unfolds in four steps:

  1. Build a Decision Sandbox: Design multiple possible courses of action.
  2. Scenario Simulation: Model the chain reactions set off once a plan is executed.
  3. Stress Testing: Proactively seek out and attack the weaknesses of a plan.
  4. Lock In the Optimal Solution: Make the final strategic choice.

Master simulation, and you will be transformed from a passive "problem solver" into an active "designer of the future." You will possess the formidable ability to foresee the outcome, avoid the risks, and secure the victory before you even act.

Section 1: Building a Decision Sandbox -- Never Have Only One Plan

In war, the gravest taboo is "staking everything on a single throw." If a commander has only one plan of attack, then the moment the enemy sees through it or an accident befalls it, the entire army is thrown into an irrecoverable abyss.

The same holds for decisions. If we are satisfied with devising a single "good-looking" plan, our thinking falls into the trap of "confirmation bias" -- we subconsciously seek out every piece of evidence that supports the plan while turning a blind eye to the latent risks and objections.

The first step of simulation, therefore, is not to evaluate a single plan, but to actively and deliberately design for ourselves multiple alternatives that are mutually independent, even mutually contradictory.

This is akin to placing several "armies" -- each representing a different strategic intent -- upon your decision sand table. It forces you to break free of a single fixed mindset, to examine the problem you face from many different angles, and thereby to widen your possibility space considerably.

A sound decision sandbox should contain at least the following three types of action plans. We will illustrate them with the earlier case of seeking a job at the "dream company."

Plan A: The Direct Approach -- The Most Straightforward, Conventional Path

The "direct approach" is the "standard answer" style of plan, built on respect for the "explicit rules" and the most straightforward logic. It generally carries the lowest risk, but it also offers the least surprise and is the most likely to dissolve into homogeneous competition.

  • Core idea: Play by the rules, and do each link to the best of your ability.
  • Design basis: Rooted mainly in the "explicit rules" and "public goals" in the "System Profile."
  1. Resume optimization: Meticulously tailor my resume to every keyword in the job description (JD) so that it passes the ATS screening.
  2. Knowledge preparation: Systematically review all the knowledge and skills a product manager requires, and work through every written-test and interview question I can find.
  3. Standard process: Apply through the official channels, patiently await each stage's notification, and diligently prepare for every exam and interview.
  4. Interview performance: In interviews, project a professional, rigorous, and upbeat professional image, answer every question clearly, and demonstrate a solid grasp of the fundamentals.

Pros and Cons of Plan A

  • Pros: Safe and dependable, unlikely to make a major misstep. If your hard credentials (education, internship experience) already far outstrip the other candidates', this is often the most efficient plan.
  • Cons: In a fiercely competitive environment, you can easily be drowned out among a sea of homogeneous, capable candidates and fail to stand out. You are merely "playing the game," not "designing the game."

Plan B: The Surprise Attack -- The Boldest, Highest-Risk, Highest-Reward Path

The "surprise attack" is a "break the rules" style of plan, built on deep insight into the "implicit rules" and the "core pains." It aims to bypass the congested main battlefield and, by an unexpected route, strike straight at the system's "vital point."

  • Core idea: Find and exploit the "loopholes" or "shortcuts" in the system.
  • Design basis: Rooted mainly in the "core pains/aspirations" in the "System Profile" and the "chains of trust" in the "Influence Network Diagram."
  1. Intelligence first: Based on my analysis of the company's "core objective" (for instance, that it is betting heavily on its AI business), I spend two weeks researching its newly released AI product in depth and write a report of over ten thousand words offering a penetrating product analysis and optimization recommendations.
  2. Precision strike: Relying on the "Influence Network Diagram," I identify the head of the AI business (the decision-maker) as a "tech heavyweight" who is highly active in the technical community and generous in sharing. I bypass HR and the standard recruitment process, attempting to send the report directly to him via LinkedIn or his personal technical blog.
  3. Value demonstration: In the email, I mention nothing about "seeking a job," only about the "product." I use a highly compelling subject line (for example, "Thoughts on the Three Fatal Flaws of Your Company's XX Product and Paths to Fix Them"), along with the first three hundred characters of incisive analysis, to entice him into opening and finishing the report.
  4. Create the opportunity: The wager is that the report's depth and value will leave an overwhelming impression, sparking keen curiosity about me as a person and prompting him to proactively create an "interview opportunity." This opportunity would skip all the earlier screening stages and place me directly in the "final round."

Pros and Cons of Plan B

  • Pros: If it succeeds, it produces a "one-strike kill" effect, instantly distinguishing you from a sea of competitors and greatly raising your probability of success.
  • Cons: The risk is extreme. If your report is not deep enough, it may be deleted as "spam"; your behavior may be judged as "not knowing the rules" or even provoke resentment; and you may never find an effective channel to reach the core decision-maker at all.

Plan C: The Flanking Maneuver -- The Most Steady, Most Long-Term Path

The "flanking maneuver" sits between the "direct approach" and the "surprise attack." It does not seek to achieve everything in one stroke; instead, through a more indirect, more "silent and nourishing" approach, it gradually builds its own "momentum" and paves the way to eventual success.

  • Core idea: First become part of the system's "ecosystem," then seek entry into the system's "core."
  • Design basis: Rooted mainly in the "values" in the "System Profile" and the "peripheral influencers" in the "Influence Network Diagram."
  1. Ecosystem immersion: I find that this company has a very strong "campus" culture and places great weight on "technical community contribution" and the "open-source spirit" (values). I therefore decide not to rush into submitting a resume.
  2. Build reputation: I will spend one to two months participating deeply in an open-source project or developer community led by the company. I actively commit code, answer questions, and write technical documentation, striving to become an active, valuable "contributor" in that community.
  3. Network infiltration: Along the way, I will have opportunities to establish online professional ties with some of the company's engineers and junior product managers (the future "influencers" and "colleagues"). Through technical exchange, I demonstrate my capability and enthusiasm.
  4. Go with the flow: Once I have built a reputation in the community and established good weak ties with internal employees, I launch my job application through their "referrals." At this point, my resume is no longer a cold blank sheet but a three-dimensional profile stamped with a "community halo" and "colleague endorsements."

Pros and Cons of Plan C

  • Pros: The risk is relatively low, and the position is flexible -- able to advance or retreat. Even if I ultimately do not receive the offer, my experience of contributing to the community becomes a highlight on my résumé and yields valuable connections.
  • Cons: The time and energy costs are very high, results come slowly, and it is ill-suited to urgent situations that demand a quick outcome.

Why Design Three Plans?

By designing Plans A, B, and C in three different styles, we compel ourselves to think deeply on three distinct levels:

  • Plan A forces us to respect the rules and consider how to excel within the established framework.
  • Plan B forces us to break convention and consider how to find the "lever of leverage" that can settle everything in a single stroke.
  • Plan C forces us to take the long view and consider how to build a lasting competitive advantage through value exchange.

Now your sand table holds three "armies" standing ready. Next, we enter the very heart of simulation -- letting these armies truly "come to blows" within our minds.

Section 2: Scenario Simulation -- Foreseeing Chain Reactions on the Chessboard of the Mind

Scenario simulation means feeding each of your alternative plans into your "Influence Network Diagram" and modeling how every key role in the network is likely to react when the plan is executed, and what further chain reactions those reactions will, in turn, set off.

It is like playing blind chess. You must hold that "Influence Network Diagram" clearly in your mind, then, like a chess player, ask: "If I make this move, how will my opponent respond? And once my opponent responds, what do I play next?"

A rigorous scenario simulation should follow the chain structure of "action -- reaction -- re-action," and should be carried out at least two or three moves into the future.

The Core Instrument of Simulation: Role Motivation Analysis

Your only basis for judging how a role will react is the "motivation file" you built for them in the previous chapter. You must put on their "glasses" and think from the standpoint of their "interests," "fears," and "aspirations."

A Worked Example: Scenario Simulation of Plan B (the Surprise Attack)

Step One: My Action (Action 1)

Through one channel or another, I successfully deliver my ten-thousand-word product analysis report to the inbox of Mr. Zhang, the head of the AI business.

Step Two: The Key Role's Reaction (Reaction 1)

Role: Mr. Zhang (the decision-maker)

Putting on his glasses: I am Mr. Zhang. I receive hundreds of emails every day. The subject line of this unsolicited email is audacious -- it actually claims my product has "three fatal flaws."

Motivation analysis:

  • Interests/Aspirations: I want my product to succeed; I want to be a leader in the AI field. I am interested in any suggestion that could make the product better.
  • Fears/Pride: I am an expert in this field. How dare some young upstart presume to "instruct" me? If what he says is nonsense, he is simply wasting my time.

Possible reactions (forked simulation):

  • Reaction 1a (positive): "Interesting. For this guy to say such a thing, he's either out of his mind or he really has something. Let me take a look." He opens the email, is drawn in by the incisive first three hundred characters, and then spends half an hour reading the whole report. He finds that the problems it identifies are indeed pain points his internal team has been debating, and that the proposed solutions are highly creative. (Probability: Medium)
  • Reaction 1b (neutral): "Clickbait." He may ignore it outright, or forward it to a subordinate (say, a product manager) with the note: "Take a look at this and give me a summary." (Probability: High)
  • Reaction 1c (negative): "Presumptuous." He feels his authority has been challenged, is displeased, and deletes the email on the spot, possibly filing a negative impression of me as "flashy." (Probability: Low, because a tech heavyweight is usually open-minded toward valuable opinions.)

Role: The HR department (the implementer/guardian of the rules)

Putting on their glasses: I am HR. I have no idea any of this is happening.

Possible reaction: None. Plan B completely bypasses them.

Step Three: My Re-action (Action 2) and the Subsequent Chain Reactions (Reaction 2)

Based on "Reaction 1a" (Mr. Zhang reads it personally and approves highly):

Mr. Zhang's action: He may reply directly to my email, saying, "Well written. Let's find time to talk." Or he may forward my report and résumé directly to the HRBP (HR business partner) responsible for recruitment, saying, "This is the person I want. Arrange the process."

Chain reaction: The HRBP, on receiving the boss's "order," contacts me at once and opens a "green channel." I may go straight to the "director-level interview," or even skip the interviews entirely and move directly to salary negotiation. (Ideal outcome.)

Based on "Reaction 1b" (Mr. Zhang forwards to a subordinate):

The subordinate product manager's action: On receiving the email forwarded by the boss, they will certainly read it carefully.

The subordinate's motivation analysis:

  • Interests: If the report is genuinely valuable, then absorbing it and reporting it up to the boss also counts as a credit to me.
  • Fears: If I overlook this report and it turns out to be genuinely valuable, and the boss finds out, I will look incompetent. At the same time, if the person who wrote it gets in, might they not become a formidable rival to me?

Chain reaction (forking again):

  • Reaction 2a (positive): The subordinate considers the report very valuable and reports to Mr. Zhang: "Boss, this person is a real talent. The report is of a high standard. I suggest you meet him yourself." (The outcome tends toward the ideal.)
  • Reaction 2b (negative): Out of jealousy, or a "why invite trouble" mentality, the subordinate reports: "Boss, I've read the report. There are a few ideas in it, but they're mostly idealistic and not really actionable." On hearing this, Mr. Zhang may let the matter drop. (Plan B fails.)

Based on "Reaction 1c" (Mr. Zhang deletes the email outright):

  • My action: Three days after sending the email, I receive no reply at all.
  • Chain reaction: Plan B is declared a failure. I must immediately switch to Plan A or Plan C, but I may already have missed the optimal window for online applications.

The Value of Simulation

After all this simulation, what have we gained?

  1. We identified key nodes: We discovered that the first key node for Plan B's success is "whether the subject line and summary can capture Mr. Zhang's attention within thirty seconds." The second key node is "what reaction the subordinate has upon receiving the forwarded email."
  2. We uncovered latent risks: We became aware of a risk we had never before considered -- that "the subordinate might obstruct out of self-interest."
  3. We optimized the action plan: Targeting these nodes and risks, we can refine Plan B. For example:
    1. Optimization 1: In the report, beyond raising problems, devote a small portion to tactfully praising the excellent work of the existing team in certain areas, so as to lower their "guard."
    2. Optimization 2: When sending the email to Mr. Zhang, also send the "unabridged" or "essence" version to the "subordinate product manager" who is likely to receive the forwarded copy, accompanied by a very humble message expressing a wish to "learn from a senior." In this way, a potential "obstacle" is turned into a potential "ally."

You see, the process of simulation is not merely "prediction"; it is also "optimization" and "refinement." It transforms our plan from a rough "idea" into a precise "action script" that already reckons with the many games of human nature and the complexity of relationships.

You need to run one, even several, rounds of detailed simulation for each of your plans A, B, and C. This process is highly taxing on the mind, but every simulation clears one more "landmine" from the path of your future real actions.

Section 3: Stress Testing and "Red Teaming" -- Hire a "Devil" to Attack Yourself

Scenario simulation is, in the main, an "internal simulation" conducted from the perspectives of "me" and the "roles within the system." But we still lack one crucial perspective -- the perspective of the "enemy."

In the military and cybersecurity fields, there is a very important method of exercise called "Red Teaming." Its core is to assemble a "Red Team" (playing the attacker/enemy) that, sparing no means and adopting the most devious angles, attacks the plan or system of the "Blue Team" (playing the defender/our side), in order to unearth the most fatal vulnerabilities -- those that even those on our own side could never imagine.

In personal decision-making, we do not have the conditions to assemble a real "Red Team." But we can, and must, split our own personality within our minds to produce the most caustic, most pessimistic, most contrarian "devil's advocate."

The task of this "devil" is to run the most ferocious "stress test" on the plans you have already simulated and optimized.

The Core of Stress Testing: Shift from "How Will It Succeed?" to "How Will It Fail?"

After completing your scenario simulation, you will often feel very pleased with one of your plans (say, the optimized Plan B), convinced that it is watertight. That is precisely the moment for the "devil" to walk on stage.

You must temporarily set aside all your affection for the plan, switch into "Red Team" mode, and ask yourself a single question: "Suppose that one year from now, this plan has been proven to be a total, catastrophic failure. What is the most likely thing that caused it to fail?"

This question forces you out of "confirmation" thinking and into "falsification" thinking. You begin to search frantically for every factor that could bring the plan down.

The Three Angles of "Red Teaming" Attack

Your "Red Team" can attack your plan from three angles:

Angle One: Attack the "Intelligence" -- "Your Map Itself Is Wrong!"

The "Red Team" will question the provenance and accuracy of all your intelligence.

"You say Mr. Zhang is the decision-maker. How do you know? What if there is an even more obscure technical committee above him? And what if your human-intelligence source is only a rank-and-file employee who has no real understanding of the senior decision-making mechanism?"

"You believe the company's core pain point is 'risk,' which you read from the annual report. But what if that is mere PR rhetoric? They say one thing with their mouths while their bodies tell the truth -- maybe what they actually care about most is 'cost,' only they are too embarrassed to say it."

"Your intelligence is all from a month ago. What if Mr. Zhang was just criticized before the board this very week over a failed project, so that his frame of mind has already shifted from 'open and enterprising' to 'conservative and risk-averse'?"

How should you respond to an "intelligence attack"?

  • Cross-verification: Check whether every key judgment you have made is supported by at least two sources of intelligence capable of corroborating each other (for instance, OSINT and HUMINT).
  • Label "confidence levels": On your map, mark a "confidence level" (high/medium/low) for every judgment. For key judgments whose confidence is "low," treat them as the highest-risk points, and think hard about how to obtain higher-quality intelligence to verify them.

Angle Two: Attack the "Logic" -- "Your Simulation Is Full of Wishful Thinking!"

The "Red Team" will question every link in your scenario simulation, above all the assumptions about "human nature."

"Why do you assume that as soon as Mr. Zhang reads your report he will admire you? How do you know he won't take it as a 'job-hunting trick' and begin to doubt your character? Would a genuinely great person really need to land a job this way?"

"You assumed that subordinate product manager would obstruct you out of jealousy. But what if the opposite is true? What if he is exactly the kind of person who longs for a talented newcomer to join and share some of his burden? Could that over-clever move of yours -- copying him on the email -- make him think, 'You don't trust the boss, and you want to buy yourself a double insurance policy with me' -- and so backfire on you?"

"Your entire plan rests on the assumption that 'Mr. Zhang will have time to read the email.' What if that very week he is abroad on a business trip, or mired in a stack-ranking exercise, at his wits' end and not reading outside emails at all? Wouldn't your 'surprise attack' become a 'suicide mission'?"

How should you respond to a "logic attack"?

  • Reverse thinking: For every key link in your simulation, ask yourself, "Is it possible that the actual situation is the exact opposite of what I imagined?"
  • Bring in "black swans": Think about low-probability "unforeseen events" that, should they occur, would be utterly disruptive (for example, a key person suddenly resigning, or the company's strategic direction abruptly shifting). Does your plan carry a certain "fault tolerance" and "capacity to adapt"?

Angle Three: Attack the "Execution" -- "Even If All Your Thinking Is Right, You Can't Pull It Off!"

The "Red Team" will question your capacity and resources for executing the plan.

"You say you'll write a deep ten-thousand-word report. Do you really have the ability? Can your understanding of their product truly reach the level of 'profound'? And if what you write is riddled with holes in the eyes of an expert, aren't you just asking to be humiliated?"

"You say you'll reach Mr. Zhang through LinkedIn. Do you know how many recruiters and job seekers bombard him every day? What makes you think your message will be seen?"

"This plan requires you to invest two weeks of full-time effort. If it fails, you may miss the golden window of autumn recruitment at every other company. Have you actually calculated that opportunity cost -- and are you willing to bear it?"

How should you respond to an "execution attack"?

  • Honest self-assessment: Objectively appraise the skills, time, and resources required to complete the plan. Are there "gaps in capability"? If so, how will you close them? (For example, find a more technically literate friend to review your report.)
  • Prepare a "Plan B": For every critical step of execution, prepare a contingency -- "if this fails, here is what I will do."

After this round of "ruthless" self-attack, your originally "perfect" plan may well have been torn to shreds.

That will hurt. But the pain is necessary, and it is worth it -- because sweating on the battlefield of the mind is how you bleed less on the battlefield of reality.

Having passed through the fire of stress testing, your plan will emerge more resilient, more thorough, and more elastic. You have foreseen every "hidden reef" that could lead to failure and prepared a "detour" or a "response" for each.

Section 4: Locking In the "Optimal Solution" -- Choosing Between Reason and Courage

Now we arrive at the final moment of decision.

Upon your sand table lie three (or more) refined action plans, each of which has passed through scenario simulation and stress testing. Each has its clear pros and cons, its risk-reward ratio, and its probability of success.

It is time to choose.

The final decision is not a purely scientific act of calculation. It also demands the decision-maker's "wisdom" and "courage." Within a complex, multi-dimensional coordinate system, you must locate the "optimal solution" best suited to the "present situation" and to "yourself."

One clarification is needed: the "optimal solution" in this chapter does not mean a globally optimal decision (no such optimum exists); it means the most sustainable choice, in the present situation, with the best fit to who you are. It remains a provisional waypoint on a map that new intelligence can rewrite at any moment.

Three Dimensions of Trade-off in Decision-Making

Risk/Reward Ratio

  • Calculate the expected value: For each plan, estimate a rough "probability of success" (P), the "gain" if it succeeds (G), and the "loss" if it fails (L). A simple expected-value formula is: E = P * G - (1 - P) * L.
  • Qualitative assessment: Which plan lets you pursue the greatest potential reward at the smallest potential cost? Plan B (the Surprise Attack) offers enormous potential gains, but its costs of failure (wasted time, a tarnished impression) are equally enormous. Plan C (the Flanking Maneuver) may not produce such immediate results, but its cost of failure is comparatively small (mainly time and energy).

Time/Resource Constraints

  • Assess your "ammunition": How much time, energy, and money can you pour into this matter?
  • Match the plan: If you must secure an offer within two weeks, then Plan C, which takes two months, is plainly unrealistic. If your writing ability and industry insight are your core strengths, then Plan B plays to your advantages better than Plan A.

Personal Risk Tolerance

  • Ask yourself: What kind of person are you? A born adventurer, or a steady planner?
  • Choose a plan that matches your "temperament": This is crucial. Even if calculation shows Plan B to have the highest expected value, if you are a person who is extremely averse to risk, the very process of executing it will fill you with anxiety and dread, warping your execution and, paradoxically, raising your odds of failure. Choosing a plan that leaves you feeling "at ease" and "assured" while you execute it is itself an important part of success.

The Final Decision: Not "Single Choice" but "Combination"

In many cases, the optimal decision is not an either/or "single choice" among Plans A, B, and C, but a skilful "combination" and "sequencing" of them.

A More Mature Decision

The combination of a "main attack plan" and an "insurance plan":

  • "I decide to make Plan B (the Surprise Attack) my main line of attack, because it best leverages my strengths and is most likely to produce a game-changing result. I will devote 70 percent of my energy to polishing that in-depth report."
  • "At the same time, I will use Plan A (the Direct Approach) as my 'insurance.' While completing the report, I will set aside 30 percent of my energy for the standard online applications and written-test preparation. This way, even if Plan B fails, I will not have lost every opportunity."

A "phased" dynamic strategy:

  • "In the first phase (the next two weeks), I will throw my full effort into Plan C (the Flanking Maneuver), building a reputation in the technical community. I will set a clear 'observation point': if within two weeks I have received no positive feedback in the community, or have established no effective connection with any internal employee, I will abandon Plan C immediately."
  • "At that point I will launch Plan B, while simultaneously beginning the preparations for Plan A..."

You see, the final decision is not a static "point" but a dynamic, rhythmic "strategic roadmap" that contains within it a number of contingent plans.

It gives you, in the face of an uncertain future, both a main line of attack and room to maneuver; both bold dreams and a firm bottom line.

Write Down Your Decision

Once you have made the final decision, write it down.

  • My final strategy is...
  • The core reasons I chose it are...
  • My first step of action is..., to be completed by...
  • My preset key checkpoint is..., and if the situation falls short of expectations, my backup plan is...

This process of "writing it out" will render your thinking unprecedentedly clear and firm. It will become the "general program" governing your future actions.

Chapter Summary: The Leap from "Seeing Clearly" to "Winning"

In this chapter, we completed the final, and most critical, step of the "open-map" methodology -- Simulation.

We learned to:

  • Build a decision sandbox: By designing plans such as the "Direct Approach," the "Surprise Attack," and the "Flanking Maneuver," we break out of fixed patterns of thought.
  • Conduct scenario simulation: On the "Influence Network Diagram," we model the chain reactions set off by a plan's execution, identifying key nodes and risks.
  • Run stress testing: We introduce "Red Teaming," attacking the fatal weaknesses of our own plans from the enemy's perspective.

We have grown, step by step, from a "Reckless Charger" groping blindly through the fog into an "Open-Map Navigator" who holds a clear map and knows how to orchestrate from within the tent.

We have bid farewell to the tragic drama of "giving everything and moving only oneself," and embraced the composure of "plan before acting, victory within grasp."

What we pursue is no longer diligence in tactics, but victory in strategy.

And yet, the story does not end here.
