Glossary

The book's core vocabulary is drawn from the General Outline and the paper of RC; a few items (the account, and the usage of the boundary of the snapshot, among others) are this book's own transcriptions within the RC framework. Fifteen entries are gathered below as the argument requires; each gives a definition and its source, and by the source the reader can go back to the original text of RC and check.

Ground of Possibility: the totality of all potential existence, holding at every moment and in parallel the states of all potential existence; it is RC's deliberately thin opening move, prior to all determinacy. A Plank with a Groove Cut in It

In 1638, in Leiden, the Elzevir press printed a new book: Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences. The author was not present. Galileo Galilei was at that time under house arrest in Arcetri on the outskirts of Florence, seventy-four years old and completely blind; the manuscript had been smuggled out of Italy by friends, and this was the first book of his whole life to be published without examination by the Church. The two interlocutors of the book discuss two new sciences, one the strength of materials, the other motion. On the Third "Day", the interlocutor Salviati describes an apparatus plain to the point of austerity.

Take a wooden beam about twelve cubits long and about three fingers thick, and cut into its side a straight groove a little wider than one finger; line the walls of the groove with parchment and polish them as smooth as possible. Then take a hard, smooth, and very round ball of bronze. For timekeeping, no pulse and no song: take a pail of water — a thin tube soldered into its bottom lets the water drip evenly — catch the outflow for the whole time the ball spends rolling down the groove, and then weigh the water on a precise balance. Each fall corresponds to a puddle of water, and the weight of the water is the time.

The Sky on Christmas Night

December 25, 1758, nighttime, the village of Prohlis near Dresden. The farmer Johann Georg Palitzsch left the Christmas table and walked out into the yard — he had another identity: amateur astronomer, with a telescope mounted at home. There was one thing in the sky for which the whole astronomical world was waiting. He swept the telescope across the predicted region, found a small dim patch of mist, and checked the star chart: nothing was marked there. What he was looking at was a comet — not just any comet, but the comet whose return had been predicted. For that patch of mist Messier in Paris had already dragged his telescope through more than a year of overcast skies and ill health; on an autumn night a few months earlier, in Taurus, he had mistaken another comet-shaped patch for the quarry he was tracking — that patch was later numbered M1, the first entry of the Messier catalog, and the comet-hunter's error became the starting point of another field. This time, fate did not leave the priority to the professionals.

Chapter 14: May 29, 1919

The Clouds over Príncipe

May 29, 1919, the island of Príncipe in the Gulf of Guinea off West Africa. A Portuguese island of cocoa plantations, colonial in its slow and humid rhythm; that day it had been raining since early morning, and the cloud lay so thick it seemed about to renege on the eclipse altogether. The English expedition was quartered at the Roca Sundy plantation on the island's northwest: Eddington and Cottingham, a few wooden crates of instruments, a dismantled astrographic telescope, and a coelostat to fold the sunlight into the tube. Eddington's task list for the journey was frighteningly short: totality lasts only minutes, and within those minutes, while the sun was entirely hidden by the moon, plates of the star field near the sun had to be taken. If the clouds did not break, two years of preparation, ten thousand kilometers of sailing, and the waiting of the Royal Society would all be written off.

Chapter 15: Probability Is Not Noise

The Clockwork of a Gram of Radium

The letter with which Chapter One opened — Einstein to Born, December 1926: He does not throw dice — was disputing the standing of determinacy in the world. This chapter redeems the second rewriting the introduction promised: how the necessity of the individual itself was put back into process. First the crack must be stretched to its widest: a gram of radium in the laboratory. Radium atoms are restless; sooner or later every atom decays, emits radiation, and becomes another element. What can physics say about this gram? An astonishing amount: the number of atoms still alive at any moment decays along a precise exponential curve; the half-life of radium is about sixteen hundred years — after sixteen hundred years, half remains; after another sixteen hundred, a quarter — a curve smooth, stable, and dependable, graduated like the face of a clock. But of any one specified atom, physics cannot say in which second it will decay. And what it gives is not the modest phrase "we do not know": quantum mechanics can in principle say of a single event only its probability, and this is a clause in the body of the theory's grammar, not an unpaid debt of the measuring instruments. Set the two faces of one and the same gram of radium side by side — clockwork in the aggregate, untimed in the individual — and the crack of "random individuals, precise totals" is the deepest door of twentieth-century physics. The thesis this chapter argues can accordingly be put first as one sentence: probability is not noise.

Chapter 16: One Mechanism, Three Forms

One Table, Three Ledgers

The night of Chapter Three deserves to be remembered. The chess player shuts his book of games — tomorrow the same set of rules will be waiting for him unchanged; the architect draws a new building on her sheets — the conventions of the foundation can be renegotiated; the navigator puts into harbor — one line from today's measurements is added to the chart. That chapter said that the three labors go each to its rest, and that the secret they share is one and the same: everything solid that they rely upon — the rules, the foundation, the chart — was once made, is being maintained, and still keeps its interface for being remade. Across the three parts that followed, this book paid its visits to these three sites of work in turn: from the walking path of Athens to the round table of Königsberg, to watch how the chess player's rules were forged and how, under the strictest examination, they showed their own boundary; from the boundaries of Alexandria to the constructions of forcing, to watch how the architect's foundations were published, how they were exchanged, and how freedom grew out of the exchanging; from the plank with the groove cut in it to the grammar of the probability amplitude, to watch how the navigator learned to put questions to wind and sea, how he was talked back to, and how, in the talking back, he changed his charts.

The Eclipse a Seventeen-Year-Old Remembered

1919, Vienna. A seventeen-year-old boy was making his way through the crowded marketplace of ideas in the capital of a defeated empire. The year stayed in his memory all his life: Eddington's expedition had brought the eclipse plates back to London, and the newspapers proclaimed Newton's ideas overthrown — the very ritual Chapter Fourteen told of. What impressed him most was not the content of relativity but the shape of the event: a theory staked itself in public, was adjudicated by the observations of the whole world, and, losing, accepted the verdict. The same marketplace was crowded with other doctrines besides — the Marxist circles he had at one time and another moved in, the Adlerian psychoanalysis professed by acquaintances of his — and these too were coherent, these too explained everything, yet never once did they stake themselves on any photographic plate.

The Newest Stretch of the Extended Line

The introduction laid down an extended line: Galileo's wooden tube extending observation, Kepler's ellipses, Newton's gravitation, today's gravitational-wave observatories — all of them graduations along this one line. Chapter One supplied its mechanism: observation does not require a human being to perform it in person — RC's General Outline says in Section 1.2 that high-precision measuring instruments can intervene directly in the observation of microscopic particles, humans observing the instrument, and the instrument observing the particles. For four hundred years the instruments on this line have grown ever stronger, but their position has never changed: the instrument is the extension of observation, and the human being is the client of observation — the plates must be developed by someone, the accounts kept by someone; at the changing of accounts of Chapter Fourteen, the ones sitting in the meeting room were people.

Back to the Night of 1610

Chapter Fifteen's close made a promise: the epilogue would return to the night of 1610. Now we go back.

The night of January 7, in Padua. Galileo pointed a wooden tube with a lens mounted in each end toward Jupiter. The introduction told the physical facts of this night: beside Jupiter stood three small stars arranged in a straight line, recorded in no star catalog ever made; on the nights that followed they moved sometimes eastward, sometimes westward, appearing in due course as four, and they circled Jupiter — not the Earth. The introduction also told the intellectual situation of this night: for nearly two thousand years the heavens had been "eternal" in the consensus of the West — the fifth element, the perfect circular orbits, the two worlds; and this consensus was not maintained by laziness: behind it stood a complete physics, cosmology, and theology, and every night of naked-eye observation supported it — the naked eye could see no satellites about Jupiter.
